Message from the President
Greetings! I am honored to have the privilege to serve our great order in this fashion and hope to serve you, our members, as well as possible. Please contact me personally if you have any questions or comments that are not answered elsewhere and I will do my best to resolve the situation.
Thanks to all of you who participated in our recent meeting in Valley Forge. I have heard many encouraging comments about the visitors’ talks and resident papers, as well as the Friday night dinner format. I have not seen the formal evaluations yet, but will report a summary of them in the near future. The board has discussed having the Pennsylvania Oral Exams on the same Friday and plan to conduct them next year during the day on Friday before the meeting. All members are welcome to participate in this educational venture designed for the attendings as well as the residents. We have done this as a regional exam in the past two years and hope to continue a tradition of joint camaraderie between the residency programs. Mark your calendars for the meeting next year in Pittsburgh, April 24-25, 2009.
Following are the winners of the Resident Paper Competition this year:
1st Place Basic Science: S. William Hazard, MD, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center
2nd Place Basic Science: Gary DeCesare, MD, University of Pittsburgh
1st Place Clinical: Jesse Selber, MD, University of Pennsylvania
2nd Place Clinical: Cathy Henry, MD, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center
George Manstein Award (best overall): Mario G. Solari, MD, University of Pittsburgh
I am also privileged to represent our specialty in the Specialty Leadership Cabinet of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. Please read the attached letter from PMS regarding the Mcare Abatement Fund and Senate Bill 1137. If I do not hear much dissension within the next week, I will sign on to this as your representative, as it advocates an extension of the fund and some other amendments regarding medical liability reform.
